It’s time to get outside and get active!

This Sunday will kick off Bike, Walk & Wheel Week, Columbia’s annual celebration of being active. The weeklong series of events, sponsored by Shelter Insurance, encourages everyone to be more active. It was created in 2002 by Local Motion in partnership with former Mayor Darwin Hindman.

The kick-off event will be the Mother’s Day Family Fun Ride on Sunday, May 8, sponsored by Broadway Diner. The free event starts at 2 p.m., with check-in beginning at 1:30 p.m., at the Collins Shelter in Stephens Lake Park. Participants will be able to bike or walk on two different routes, with one being a 2-mile ride around the perimeter of Stephens Lake Park and the other being a 4-mile ride that will include a portion of the Hinkson Creek Trail. The 2-mile route is the recommended option for younger children or walkers.

On May 11, Bikes & Brews, the signature event of the week, will take place in downtown Columbia. This evening bike tour includes stops for local microbrew samples. Not a cyclist but still want to participate? No problem! The route is easily walkable, according to organizers. The event will begin at 6 p.m. at CycleX, 203 N. Providence Road, with check-in starting at 5:15 p.m. Tickets are $40 and allow participants to get a microbrew sample at each participating stop.

Other events planned for the week include:

  • Hinkson Happy Hour at 4 p.m. May 9
  • Wheelchair & Bike Wash at 5:30 p.m. May 10
  • Gears, Games & Grub at 5:30 p.m. May 12
  • Breakfast Station Day at 7 a.m. May 13
  • Family Bike Demo at Columbia Farmers Market at 8 a.m. May 14
