Rum, Apples And Cinnamon Unite
Dear Fancy Bar Chef,
With the falling of the leaves comes the beautiful fall weather when my husband and I enjoy our homemade cider. We love pumpkin, squash, nuts, apples, cinnamon and clove along with almost any fall flavor. I was hoping, dear Bar Chef, that you could come up with a drink that would both surprise and suit my husband’s palate.
Falling for Fall
Dearest Falling for Fall,
After reading your email I was struck with two things immediately: apples and cinnamon. My grandmother often curled up with a nice cocktail or two in the fall and I seem to remember apples and cinnamon filling the room with their scent. Grandma also used to read to me while she was imbibing her wonderful bouquet of spices and perfume. One such story was The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas. Grandma’s favorite chapter was Chapter 65: “It was a stormy and dark night; vast clouds covered the heavens …” I knew she loved this because she loved the cocktail Dark & Stormy that consisted of dark rum, lime and ginger beer.
So I asked her, “What were you drinking all those times you were reading to me, Grandma?”
Her answer: a combination of dark rum, apple liqueur and ginger beer with cinnamon sugar that she calls “The Chapter 65.”
I offer you this for you and your husband to enjoy this year!
The Fancy Bar Chef
The Chapter 65
3 ounces apple liqueur (I like Thatcher’s Ginger spice liqueur)
2 ounces Gosling’s dark seal rum
Add to a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to chill. Strain into a cinnamon-sugar-rimmed cocktail glass. Top with ginger beer. Garnish with apples if you’d like.
