Wine By Design

Wineart-9ac47377The annual art competition to land a label on the Les Bourgeois Vineyards Collector’s Series has produced another trio of artisan wines and keepsake artwork at the Rocheport winery.

This year’s collection, unveiled at a July release party, features two quintessential American reds and a unique Missouri white. The wines and their complementary label art reflect a taste of Americana.
2014 Ozark Mountain Moscato
Who knew the Ozarks could produce such an intensely flavorful, aromatic wine? The bouquet is a perfume of tropical fruit and flowers; the taste is fruit bowl in a wineglass. Flavors of peaches, pears, pineapple and honeysuckle bring a slight sweetness that is offset by a hint of grapefruit. This could be your go-to wine of the summer. Serve it chilled with grilled seafood or entrées in cream sauces, salads, summer fruits and cheese plates, or use it as a base for white sangria.

The label artwork, a bright watercolor entitled Marbles1, is by Carolyn Coffey Wallace of Ava, a former high school art teacher.
2013 American Zinfandel
This dry red wine with a sweet berry aroma offers a mouthful of blackberries with a smooth plum undercurrent. Oak spice gives a satisfying finish. It has a 14.8 percent alcohol level so be sure and pair it with food; good choices are burgers, barbecue, pasta and pizza.

A shaggy bovine face gazes out from the label artwork, Half Scottish, by Columbia photographer Sherrie Kueckelhan. She and her husband, Lynn, operate Kueckelhan Photography, where they specialize in rustic images.
2013 American Syrah
Boasting a rich aroma and flavor of cherries and chocolate, LBV’s venture into Syrah has produced a dry red with firm tannins and a 15 percent alcohol level. This wine pairs well with grilled red meats — any cut of steak, prime rib or other beef entrée. Like any Syrah, it will cellar well.

The label artwork, a pastel entitled World Beyond by painter Rida Fatima of Chesterfield, depicts a bicycle amid a brilliant burst of sunny color. Fatima owns Reeds Art gallery in Chesterfield.
