A New View

As a photographer, I have access to some unique points of view in the community. Here is one of them, in A New View.

Assignment: Clydesdales
The Location: Warm Springs Ranch

Warm Springs Ranch

I remember one of the biggest thrills for me while growing up was a chance to see the Budweiser Clydesdales. My dad would make sure to point them out at a baseball game as they made their way around the field.

I’m not sure why I thought they were so cool. Maybe it was their hairy hooves or maybe I was amazed that the Dalmatian that rode atop the wagon didn’t try to jump off.

As I got older, I was able to see those horses up close and I could not believe how enormous they were. I had new respect for them.

When offered a chance to walk among them at Warm Springs Ranch, I jumped at it. Even as newborn foals, these are big critters.

One particular Clydesdale yearling was a little too fond of me. His name was Barney. Barney likes to have all of your attention. If he doesn’t get it, he pushes or nips at you until you acknowledge him.

I found myself hiding from him between other horses, but Barney knew where I was, even if he couldn’t see me.

He was just listening for the click of my shutter.
