For Tim Rich, serving others is a way of life. Born into The Salvation Army as a home church, Rich was a third-generation member of the organization and spent many holiday seasons working the Red Kettles with his family. In 1984, Rich’s work with The Salvation Army brought him to Columbia where he continued to serve as an officer and ordained minister until he began work with Dr. Donald Ruthenberg, former President of Columbia College, as a special projects employee. Rich’s service career continued when he was recruited by Peggy Kirkpatrick to be a development director for The Food Bank of Central and Northeast Missouri, eventually becoming an associate director.
Now serving alongside Welcome Home, Rich is grateful for his mentors and their training. His experiences have taught him patience, leadership and how to engage people and motivate them toward helping others. Rich takes great pride in his life’s journey, bringing him to work with Welcome Home’s volunteers as it’s a cause that resonates with his heart and motivates him daily.
“Serving others was not just an occasional ‘feel good’ activity,” Rich says. “It’s a way of life.”
In his free time, Rich enjoys spending time with his wife, Lauri, watching their favorite shows. He’s also discovered a passion for American bourbon and is interested in learning more about the history and distilling process. With his kids no longer in the nest, Rich has also found more time to explore his family’s genealogy and experiment with home fermenting and pickling of vegetables, especially sauerkraut.
