Plans are underway for a swim, scuba and travel company to build a new facility on Vawter School Road. Columbia’s local dive shop, Captain Nemo’s, was purchased by Diventures in 2020.

Diventures hopes to build a full-service swim and scuba center, including classes on safe dive training. According to the company’s marketing material given out at a neighborhood meeting, Diventures offers swimming lessons to all ages, snorkeling classes, water aerobics (including certification) and open swim. Diventures also plans scuba diving vacations for travelers to experience diving adventures.

Company officials met with neighbors recently to share details of the new location. If approved, the facility will border Vawter School Road and Frontgate Lane. In 2017, Addison’s restaurant received approval to open its second location at the corner of Vawter School Road and Frontgate Drive. At that time, neighbors voiced concerns about traffic, lighting and ensuring the building blends in with the neighborhood.

In addition to Columbia, Diventures has 11 other locations, including facilities in Kansas City and Springfield.
