It’s almost swimsuit season. If your spring is shaping up as a season of deprivation, consider adding wine back to your regimen, 100 calories at a time.
Skinnygirl Wines, a division of the cocktail company created by“Real Housewives” star Bethenny Frankel, offers a line of low-calorie libations. Six varietals — Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Grigio, Moscato and Prosecco — plus red, white and rosé blends make up the collection. Each 5-ounce pour contains 100 calories, compared to traditional wines of 120 to 125 calories per serving.
Calories in wine come from alcohol, derived from the sugar in the grapes. Vintners limit the calories by harvesting grapes before they are fully ripe and fermenting the lower sugar content to a 10 percent alcohol level. The result is a lighter version of traditional favorites.
Skinnygirl Cabernet Sauvignon carries an herbaceous/berry aroma for its dry red wine with traces of dark cherry/chocolate flavors. Don’t expect a bold red from this bottle, but the less fruitful flavor carries little tannin on the finish as well, making it more food-friendly than traditional cabs. It pairs well with beef stir-fry and salad.
Skinnygirl Pinot Grigio is light and refreshing. A fruity aroma of pineapple leads to refreshing tropical fruit flavors with citrus undertones that hint at an underlying sweetness. Serve it well chilled with a variety of summer fare or as a solo cocktail.
Other Skinnygirl wines available in Columbia include Chardonnay, which boasts a light apple taste with vanilla spice notes, and Moscato, a slightly effervescent offering with traces of sweet peach and pear flavor.
These lighter wines won’t burden your pocketbook, either. At about $10 a bottle, they’re at a reasonable price point for experimenting. Check availability at your favorite local wine merchant.
