La Siesta downtown closes

Sadly, CoMo’s lost another dining destination. La Siesta Mexican restaurant downtown on Walnut and Ninth streets recently closed its doors. But all’s not lost: According to the restaurant’s Facebook page, the north side location will remain open.

Parking Prelude

Photos submitted Mariola Klepadlo and Thaddeus Usovsky met by chance at a downtown parking garage July 31, 2017. They then decided to dine together and walked to Tellers. After a wonderful evening of conversation, they agreed to meet again the next morning for breakfast at Main Squeeze. Fast forward to their one-year dating anniversary, where […]

It’s A Go(-Go)!

Photos by L.G. Patterson Opening a vegan food truck wasn’t exactly Gina Overshiner’s dream. Initially, she had a far less grand goal: She planned to peddle — or rather pedal — her fare from a vegan food bike. In fall 2018, she started talking to her friend Leigh Lockhart, owner of Main Squeeze, about starting […]

Chefs Off-Shift

You’d think the last thing chefs want to think about once they’re off their kitchen clocks is food. And you’d be partly right: Turns out the local toques featured in our Foodie Four each have a different culinary creation or gastronomic go-to that they like to whip up once they’re home post-shift. We asked each […]

The Daniel Boone Little League softball team

Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend

Talk about winning one for the home team. The Daniel Boone Little League (DBLL) softball team took home a history-making third place win in the Little League World Series this past August. “We’re the first softball team in the State of Missouri to ever make the Little League World Series (LLWS),” says Nick Britton, the […]

John Miles and Taryn Cadle

Athletic Alums Team Up

You could say that after spotting Taryn Cadle, John Miles was a bit squirrely. According to their “how we met” story, John and his friend Case  — one of John’s groomsmen — ate breakfast together at Dobbs Hall on MU’s campus every morning before class back in 2011.  According to Taryn, Case could often be […]

A Return to Roots

A Return to Its Roots

Photos by Notley Hawkins Post-pandemic, many of us are finally enjoying reunions and homecomings. That’s certainly true for the Boone County Fair, which returns to Columbia July 20 to 24 for the first time in 5 years. Its return in Columbia’s Bicentennial year is just the icing on the anniversary cake. For Jeff Cook, owner […]

Rush of Opportunity

Photos by LG Patterson What do the University of Missouri’s president and a fiction novel about the California gold rush have in common? A writer named Gordy Sauer. As Mun Choi’s speech writer and an about-to-be-published author, Sauer believes fiction and speech writing have a lot of parallels. “Speech writing is for someone, so you […]

Placid Paradise

Jeremy Spillman readily admits that early last year, when his family first floated the idea of putting in a pool, it held zero appeal. He didn’t want the maintenance hassles or upkeep costs. Nor was he eager to spend money on something

To Market, To Market

Talk about a recipe for success! The new pop-up, The Strollway Market, which opened last month in the Harold’s downtown location, is a collaboration from several very accomplished pros on Columbia’s cuisine scene: Michael Urban and Melissa Poelling,

Birds of a Feather

John Faaborg’s love of birds took flight early on. “My brother took me birding when I was 7 years old and I was hooked for life,” he says. “The excitement of being able to identify birds was one of the first things that drew me in, then . . .

Spices and grains on a modern rack

Taking Stock

When cooler weather comes calling and we spend more time inside, we tend to lean more on items in the pantry rather than the garden or market, says Inside Columbia’s Food Editor Chef Brook Harlan. We also tend to turn to hearty, filling foods to help us warm up and “weather” the falling temps. Casseroles, […]
