Show Me Opera: “Alcina”

The Show Me Opera presents “Alcina,” by Georg Friedrich Händel. Assisted by the University Philharmonic, conductor Barry Ford presents this stunning opera experience.

The sorceress Alcina lives on an island in the middle of the ocean. She seduces every knight who lands on her shores, and turns him into her love slave. When she tires of him, she turns him into a statue, a beast, a tree or a bush – thus her island looks like a lush garden with many statues and roaming ferocious animals. Bradamante, the wife of Ruggiero (Alcina’s latest love slave), arrives at the island dressed as a warrior, in order to gain entry into Alcina’s kingdom, so that she can find Ruggiero and rescue him.
