Each year, the Columbia Values Diversity Awards are given to an individual or family, and an organization that put promote appreciation for the vibrant cultures that make up the melting pot that is Columbia.
The individual or family award was given to Kelechi and Chris Adejo, who emigrated to Columbia from Nigeria in 2011. They are deeply involved in the community; they work with CASA, Heart of Missouri, United Way, MU Healthcare and more. They strive to foster inclusivity in Columbia through their volunteer and education efforts.
The city’s organization award went to Crowned Counseling. Crowned Counseling is a mental health resource that aims to be inclusive and non-judgmental. They pay extra close attention to how mental health practices vary across upbringings and cultures. Along with this, they also work to lessen economic and social barriers to quality mental health.
