The Assignment: Downtown Columbia
The Location: Ninth and Cherry
Being a photographer, I can get some access to unique points of view of the community. In the following months, I would like to share with you some of those sights with A New View.
I really like hanging out in downtown Columbia. I appreciate most of the people and all the unique, locally owned businesses that line Broadway and Ninth Street. Whether you are getting ice cream from Sparky’s, flowers from Kent’s or a burger from Booches, each place offers a friendly face and a good time.
What people seem to miss is that the architecture is just as unique as the shops. All you have to do is look up to see what you are missing.
The stylings of those old buildings are works of art. I am glad to see most of the owners downtown have embraced the historical significance of these properties. These owners work to maintain their beauty while renting the space to local businesses who fit with the aesthetic.
Meanwhile, The Hall Theatre is a beautiful building that should be a cultural centerpiece to The District, but has been sitting vacant for over 10 years.
My hope is that when a local business moves into the landmark, it sparks a renewed cultural pride in the area.
