Breakfast Guide

By Inside Columbia

What’s better than Sunday morning brunch? Care for a mimosa? Iced latte? Eggs, bacon and sausage? How about some local pastries? Perhaps a little hair of the dog to stave off the Saturday night spins? Or maybe start your morning right with fruit and a fresh-pressed juice. Either way, make the most important meal of the day also the most delicious with Columbia’s very own “Breakfast Club.”

It might not look like much from the outside, but upon entering the doors at Big Mama’s Cafe, you’re immediately met with friendly faces and a cozy sense of belonging. A family-owned establishment, Big Mama’s serves up traditional breakfast platters, with specialties such as the “Big Mama’s Fresh” (breaded tenderloin served with two eggs, hash browns and gravy) and the “Country-Fried Skillet” (country-fried steak covered with cheese and topped with two eggs and gravy, served with a biscuit on the side).

Ellianna’s Donut Shop
Donuts, Pastries
$
No time to sit down for breakfast? Stop by Ellianna’s for a freshly made donut, croissant, kolache or biscuit — better yet, why not try them all? The ultimate any-timeof-day treat, nothing beats a frosted donut covered in rainbow sprinkles paired with chocolate milk. Grab a few for yourself or bring a box to work to make up for the fact that you were running late!

Sage

$-$$
Enjoy a cup of coffee alongside sweet and savory pastries, perfect for a relaxed morning bite. Sage, which recently celebrated two years in business, brings innovative takes on traditional croissants, muffins, cinnamon rolls and drinks. Flavors run wild — lavender-honey scones, tomato-pesto cruffins, strawberry matcha — so take a trip downtown for your new favorite cafe.

Fretboard Cafe
Coffee, Organic
$
Slip into this hidden gem tucked in the Arts District. The curated selection of house-roasted espresso, homemade scones and cozy sofas will surely soothe your morning headache. Snuggle up with a book, play a game from their stash with friends or, if you’re a stroller, peruse the vinyls next door and take a mural walk. If the Missouri heat is behaving itself, photosynthesize outside and delight in people-watching with your smooth espresso or tea. If compelled, join every third Friday for the namesake open-mic night.
