With the new year in full swing, the Columbia City Council met Jan. 5 to discuss strategic priorities for our city to thrive.

Goals focused on public safety, affordable housing and city employees. For public safety, the council aims to add six full-time police positions, invest in Flock Safety System, continue a one-million-dollar investment into police and fire pensions, and more. To align with housing goals, the city will analyze the recommendations in the Boone County Housing Study and invest in homes with the Columbia Community Land Trust. City employees may see funding increased for personal and benefits, along with a pay increase by 3.5% in the 2026 fiscal year.

The strategic priorities for the city included organizational excellence, reliable and sustainable infrastructure, a resilient economy, a safe community and an inclusive and equitable community.
