By For the first time in its history, the Missouri State Button Society is bringing its show to Columbia! From 1-5 p.m. Friday, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, the public can attend the Missouri State Button Society 2024 Show and view buttons reflecting time periods, fashions, cultures and more.
Members of the society will have their buttons on display for viewing. Additionally, a competitive exhibit will be shown, as well as sellers and experts from out of state will be in attendance. The event is free and open to the public.
For over 80 years, the society has collected and preserved buttons. “People are often quite surprised at the artistic value of 19th and 20th century buttons that once adorned garments,” says Barbara Weeks, show chair. “Often, they depict scenes or figures from literature, opera, mythology or history, while also representing social trends, events and art styles.”
The public will be able to purchase buttons by looking through poke boxes. Buttons will be priced .50 cents to $10. “It’s a very satisfying, tactile experience!” Weeks says.
