Melanie Bowers knows the powerful impact a good teacher can have on a student’s life. As the owner of Sylvan Learning, Bowers is passionate about building confidence through education and giving young students the tools to shape their own futures. She was inspired by the teachers she had growing up who showed genuine interest in her education and believed in her. This sparked her career as a resilient, strategic, mission-driven leader.
Bowers knows that access to resources such as funding, facilities and strategic partnerships — the business side of education — is uniquely challenging for women. Bowers navigates this by seeking out mentors and aligning herself with like-minded leaders. She says watching a fellow educator succeed is profoundly fulfilling. She is grateful for her role models, whether it be the seasoned professionals she has built a network with or leaders she has admired from afar, Bowers’ mentors remind her that leadership isn’t about knowing everything — it’s about being willing to grow and surrounding yourself with people who push you to succeed.
For Bowers, being a “Woman to Watch” isn’t about her personal successes. It’s about enriching the lives of students by showing up with integrity. “If someone sees me as a woman to watch ,I hope they see commitment, compassion and a dedication to providing a service in the community,” Bowers says. Being a “Woman to Watch” also means encouraging women who may be aspiring towards a similar career.
Bowers says the future for women in educational leadership is “bright and necessary.” She encourages women to seek out mentors, say yes to challenging opportunities and never stop learning. Bowers has learned from her students every day since opening Sylvan Learning of Columbia in 2021. She says each child brings their own unique set of strengths, challenges and potential. These students just need a teacher to believe in them — the same way Bowers’ teachers inspired her. “It’s not just about careers,” Bowers says. “We’re shaping the future of the next generation. That’s one of the most powerful places a woman can lead from.”
