A new group has been founded with a mission to stop or slow the destruction of historic buildings, increase public awareness of the importance and existence of Columbia’s history, and salvage and sell historic materials.

The Historic Preservation Alliance of Columbia held its first meeting in June and will work with Columbia’s existing resources including the Boone County History & Culture Center, the city of Columbia’s Historic Preservation Commission and other organizations.

“Our group will do the things that the BCHCC and the HPC can’t or don’t do, such as lobbying and pushing for legislative changes to prevent the destruction of historic buildings,” says Dianna Borsi O’Brien, one of the organizers of the new group, in a news release.

The historic preservation group is currently welcoming new members and partners. The next meeting is set for 7 p.m. Aug. 30 in the Columbia Public Library.
