The MizzouRec Complex has officially opened its new outdoor fitness facility. On Oct. 18, MizzouRec hosted a grand opening for the new fitness space with a ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by a reception in the aquatic classroom.

There were several guest speakers at the grand opening party, including Dr. Stephen Byrd, MizzouRec’s director; Dr. Angela King Taylor, interim vice chancellor for student affairs; and Miyah Jones, president of Missouri Students Association and a Mizzou Rec student employee. The grand opening party also had giveaways, raffle prizes and fun challenges for attendees.

MizzouRec announced the outdoor facility would replace Truman Pond in July 2022. According to an article by the Columbia Missourian, the goal is for the new outdoor space to reduce crowding in its pump rooms. While the facility is outdoors, it will be open all year round as it is covered by sunshades and cooled with three large mechanical fans. When its wintertime, the Missourian says, the space will be warmed by rows of heaters above the equipment.

The new facility is open during MizzouRec’s regular business hours from 5:30 a.m.-11 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 5:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m.11 p.m. Sunday. For more information on the new outdoor fitness facility, visit mizzourec.com.
